The Department for Education state that there is a need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

At Moss Hey, our whole school values (Be Kind, Be Responsible, Be Brave, Be Positive, Be Inclusive) work in partnership with the Fundamental British Values and underpin how we work as a school community. These values are not only taught but are embedded in all that we do. By promoting these shared values, Moss Hey pupils are better prepared for life in a modern and diverse Britain. Our whole school approach, inclusive environment, and strong ethos, seeks to ensure that these values are promoted and reinforced regularly and in the following ways.

Democracy: Moss Hey children are taught to Be Positive. Democracy is embedded at the school. From early years onwards, we promote the importance of the children's right to ask questions, so they know that their questions, views and opinions are valid. Pupils are always listened to by adults and they are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voice heard. Pupils also can air their opinions and ideas through our School Council and share their voice when meeting with subject leaders. Pupils have opportunities to vote on things such as whole class Dojo treats.

The Rule of Law: Moss Hey children are taught to Be Responsible. The importance of laws, whether they are those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced. Our school’s behaviour policy and learning behaviours, ensure the importance of laws are deeply embedded.  Our pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, as well as the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.

Individual Liberty: Moss Hey children are taught to Be Brave. Whether it is through choice of challenge, of how they record, of participation in our numerous extra-curricular activities, Moss Hey pupils are given the freedom to make choices. We actively encourage, educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely. Through the provision of a safe and supportive environment, our pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms. Examples of this can be clearly seen in our e-safety and P.S.H.E. lessons; similarly studying history provides good opportunities for discussion about rights and individual liberty, discrimination, tolerance and respect of others.

Mutual Respect for and Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs: Moss Hey children are taught to Be Kind and to Be Inclusive – these core values promote mutual respect and encourage tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. The pupils know and understand that it is expected that respect is shown to everyone, whatever differences we may have.  We guide and nurture children, so they develop a respect for themselves and an understanding of uniqueness and how our differences are what makes us special.

Moss Hey Primary School enhances pupils understanding of different faiths and beliefs through RE lessons, assemblies and P.S.H.E. – learning is often enriched through visitors to our school and by visiting local places of worship. Promoting the nine protected characteristics, studies of significant people and initiatives such as Black History Month, Pride Month and LGBT+ History Month also contribute to enriching and extending our pupils’ understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society built upon mutual respect and tolerance.
