Overview of the Year

Welcome to Year 1’s page where you can find out about all the exciting things that we get up to!

In Year 1, we continue to create a stimulating environment that allows the children to become independent and resilient learners. The transition from Reception to Year 1 is designed to be smooth, maintaining a focus on play-based learning. This approach gradually shifts towards more structured whole-class learning as the year progresses, to prepare them for the more formal learning environment in Year 2.

Curriculum

In Year 1 we have a rich curriculum with half termly themes, dfetails of our curriculum can be found in the termly overviews below.

Our local history theme centred around the Manchester Cotten Industry is furthered enhanced with a trip to Quarry Bank Mill.  Our science themes of seasonal change, animals including humans, everyday materials and plants are delivered throughout the year through a mixture of indoor and outdoor learning.  The themes are consolidated when they go on a trip to Peak Wildlife Park.

Within the curriculum we study significant people who are relevant to our themes, such as: Floella Benjamin, Wassily Kandinsky and Queen Victoria.  Our curriculum is further enhanced by the study of additional significant people, Elton John and Helen Keller.  We learn about the significant people to inspire and motivate our children as welll as promoting our values and learning behaviours.

Homework

  • Daily reading
  • Maths homework will be set on School Jam each week
  • Spellings will be sent home on a Friday ready to learn for a spelling quiz the following Friday

Class Dojo

Class Dojo is a platform we use for acknowledging positive behaviour, sharing children’s learning and communicating with parents.

Children can earn Dojo points for demonstrating our school values and learning behaviours and this is celebrated in our weekly assembly.  To promote team work and collaboration, a whole class Dojo target is set and when it is achieved the children receive a reward of their choice.  These have included, a pyjama party, a scooter day, a crafts afternoon and a disco.

myHappymind

At Moss Hey we follow myHappymind which is an NHS-backed curriculum for primary schools. It focuses on building resilience, self-esteem, and happiness in children. The lessons and activities contain quizzes, songs, animations and feature lovely characters. The children will complete five modules, Meet Your Brain, Celebrate, Appreciate, Relate and Engage. Each Year group works through the 5 modules allowing for a whole school culture to build. Within each module children learn positive habitats which they will then use all of the time. The children have journals to record ideas and feelings.
