Moss Hey Music Curriculum
“Music is life, that’s why our hearts have beats”
Intent: To develop a curiosity and love for music. As well as developing an appreciation for different musicians and composers.
At Moss Hey, we provide our children with a high-quality music education that inspires creativity, self-expression and a lifelong love of music. Through our carefully planned and progressive music curriculum, we aim to nurture children's musicality from reception, developing their skills, confidence and enjoyment of performing, listening and composing.
Our Music curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all our pupils, ensuring a broad and balanced experience that supports their cultural, social and emotional development. To support us with the delivery of music, we use the Kapow Primary Music curriculum, which is grounded in educational research and best practice. It follows a spiral structure, where key musical skills and knowledge: performing, composing, listening, and understanding notation, are revisited and developed progressively each year. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build confidence, creativity, and musical understanding through engaging, practical activities.
We believe that music is a vital part of every child’s education. It plays a key role in promoting our school ethos of nurturing curiosity, building resilience and fostering ambition, while also supporting the teaching of British values, such as mutual respect and tolerance through the exploration of diverse musical traditions and cultures.
Peripatetic instrumental lessons
We have a full timetable of instrumental tuition, with professional visiting tutors from Stockport Music Service teaching here in school.
We currently offer lessons on; keyboard, flute, violin, guitar, woodwind and brass at a reasonable cost of
Individual 20-minute lesson: £19.80
Shared 20-minute lesson: £9.90
A further benefit of learning with Stockport Music Service is the use of two schemes to help with the instruments needed. There is the opportunity to hire instruments from the music service while having lessons, this is very popular with parents until their child has decided exactly which instrument is for them.
Many children will have completed Grade exams on their instrument by the end of Year 6. All children learning an instrument are invited to perform in a special musical assembly where they can showcase their talents each year.
Ukulele lessons
Our Year 4 class enjoys weekly ukulele lessons taught by an expert music teacher from the Stockport Music Service. This valuable program provides our pupils with an outstanding opportunity to learn a musical instrument for a full academic year, building foundational music skills and fostering a lifelong appreciation for music.
