Writing at Moss Hey Primary

At Moss Hey Primary, we recognise that oracy and writing are foundational skills that empower our pupils to thrive both academically and socially.

Our writing curriculum is designed to provide a broad and balanced education that meets the needs of all children.  Our writing curriculum is research-informed and impact-proven, we follow the scheme Ready Steady Write from Literacy Counts

Our writing curriculum has been carefully designed and adapted to support all children to master the foundational skills and write for a clear audience and purpose. Through the use of high-quality, vocabulary-rich texts, we provide exciting and meaningful reasons to write.  Children are immersed in literature and taught to craft their writing with precision, using a range of pedagogical approaches, including sentence accuracy, modelled writing and shared writing, as well as regular opportunities for editing. This approach is rooted in the intrinsic link between reading, writing, and oracy, enabling pupils to produce work that is clear, structured, and purposeful.

Our aim is to nurture confident, capable writers by providing them with the tools and strategies they need to succeed in all subjects and then beyond primary school.

Spelling at Moss Hey

Our spelling programme builds seamlessly upon our phonics. In Reception and Year 1, we use Essential Letters and Sounds Phonics, transitioning in Year 2 and up to Year 6 we use the Ready Steady Spell scheme.  Both are systematic, evidence-based spelling schemes.

Our consistent teaching approaches equip all pupils with the tools to master the spelling patterns appropriate for their year group and regular opportunities to revisit prior learning, helps children move spelling knowledge into their long-term memory.

Our spelling curriculum helps children to secure the essential skills, strategies and fluency they need to spell confidently across the curriculum.
